“I can paint you a house, but I cannot paint you a home”
2024
- Explanation does not kill art. It makes it possible to place the feeling you get into context.
- You can choose to keep the feeling floating, and don’t read the explanation,
- or read it and dive deeper in the head of the artist,
- therefore sharing the experience as well as the emotion behind the artwork.
- This aligns with the concept of home. I can paint you a house, but I cannot paint you a home.
- I can try to paint you the feeling of home, but without explanation you will
- not be able to place those feelings into
- our (artist-audience) shared context. To exercise both of these concepts,
- I want to paint my first home away from my parents.
- I can paint the house, and via use of color I will try to show you how I felt there.
- But only if you experienced the things I experienced there,
- you can look at the house in the picture and call it home.
