‘Ze was jong’
Collaboration with Mette Steenbergen

2024

When a woman in her twenties poses as a model for a painting,
she realises this might be the right time to learn more about her fear.
The story of a young woman told and embodied by a
‘60-something’ actress, as well as the other way around.

For the movie Ze was jong, this painting delves into themes of womanhood,
capturing the intricate bond between an older and a younger woman.
Some areas, like the face, are more detailed and realistic, while others,
such as the clothing, appear intentionally unfinished, guiding the viewer’s gaze and inviting
reflection on what remains hidden or implied. The flat, patterned background
gestures to girlhood in all its complexity, its innocence, fruitfullness, and unspoken depth.
This balance of detail and suggestion conveys the layered,
evolving nature of female friendship and identity.

The project consists of three paintings: sketch, half way and finished.
